Innovation and Research Opportunities

Supporting SIIM's Mission through Education and Research — The mission of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) is to advance computer applications and information technology in medical imaging through education and research. Several society initiatives further that mission, including the TRIP™ Initiative, which aims to lead research to address the problem of information/image data overload; the SIIM Annual Meeting, which highlights promising research; and practice guideline development in digital imaging and the electronic practice.

Make a tax deductible contribution to the SIIM R & E Programs.   Your contibution will support education, clinical research, and innovation in the field of imaging informatics.

TRIP™ Initiative

TRIP™ (Transforming the Radiological Interpretation Process) is a SIIM initiative to spearhead research, education, and discovery of innovative solutions to the problems facing the imaging informatics community today.

TRIP™ focuses on three fundamental objectives:

1) improving efficiency of interpretation of large data sets
2) improving the timeliness and effectiveness of communication, and
3) decreasing medical errors.

The ultimate goal of the initiative is to improve the quality and safety of patient care.

A TRIP™ conference along with several forums and white papers were developed between 2004-2007 that raised awareness and support for TRIP™ research and educational activities by bringing the best of industry, government, and academia together to interact and share results. To learn more about the history of the SIIM TRIP™ Initiative go to the (2004-2007) TRIP™ Website.

The latest SIIM TRIP™ project is defining a workflow lexicon so the standardize terms can be used to compare imaging practices, improve efficiencies, and foster the development of best practices. Several SIIM corporate members are TRIP™ Corporate Partners and are at the forefront, working together with researchers and providers to develop the processes and dashboards to improve provider performance and enhance quality patient care.

In 2011, the SIIM TRIP Subcommittee and its vendor partners have defined workflow and key performance indicators. The initial efforts of this working group was presented as a vendor-neutral business analytics demonstration at the 2011 SIIM Annual Meeting.

SIIM Annual Meeting Scientific Program

Each year SIIM Young Investigators and Grantees have the opportunity to present their reseach results at the SIIM Annual Meeting. The SIIM Annual Meeting has become a forum for promising research through its scientific papers, posters and demonstrations sessions and awards program. Read more on how SIIM activities and awards provide stepping stones for up and comers in the imaging informatics community.

SIIM Supported Research and Innovations

SIIM's grant program has offered research grants and imaging informatics training grants in support of research in imaging informatics.

The SIIM grants program has produced innovative research that promises benefits throughout the medical enterprise, including an open-source, Web-based application for radiology decision support; the use of mobile computing to improve the ordering and reporting of radiology examinations in the emergency department; a "dashboard" system to display real-time information about the status of interfaces between PACS and other medical systems; and using RIS and PACS to integrate "just-in-time" learning into routine daily practice.

The SIIM grant program is currently being re-shaped into a Challenge Prize Program. It is anticipated the specifics of the new program will be announced in early 2013.

Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards Development

SIIM collaborates with the ACR and the AAPM on the development and revision of practice guidelines in the field of imaging informatics.
