This training course is designed to provide professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the essential components of the DICOM standard, including its protocol and data format. Students will learn how to resolve interface issues with devices using this interface standard, making it an invaluable resource for those who support, manage, and develop medical imaging devices. Throughout the course, students will learn the protocol details like establishing connections and DICOM protocol commands. Additionally, students will gain hands-on experience reading and fixing DICOM headers and configuring DICOM devices. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the DICOM standard and the tools necessary to work with this interface standard effectively.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Recall the essential components of the DICOM standard, including its protocol and data format.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the DICOM standard’s protocol details, including establishing connections and DICOM protocol commands.
  • Apply knowledge of the DICOM standard to read and fix DICOM headers and configure DICOM devices.

Format/Class Structure

This is a live, virtual course held on SIIM’s Zoom platform. Participants will engage in instructor-led, interactive learning with hands-on training using SIIM’s Virtual Hospital Program (VHP).

Who Should Take This Course

The course is tailored for professionals who regularly interface with a PACS, such as PACS administrators and Radiologic Technologists. Biomedical engineers, service engineers, and IT personnel who work with digital acquisition modalities and image-enabled systems like Electronic Health Records will also benefit from this course. The course is also ideal for software developers, integration and interface analysts looking to build a career in healthcare imaging and informatics.
