AAPM-SIIM Symposium: AI Systems Need Physic(ist)s Too

This Joint Symposium aims to convey the valuable medical physics perspective on AI/ML/DL methods for image analysis with real clinical impact, and has helped to expose new, synergistic relationships between medical physics and imaging informatics. It will consist of two presentations.

CAD, Radiomics, AI: The Evolving Role of Medical Physics
Presenter: Ingrid Reiser, PhD, FAAPM, University of Chicago

From CAD to radiomics to AI, the scope of medical physics continues to expand beyond traditional boundaries. In this session, Dr. Reiser will discuss how these technologies are reshaping imaging science, advancing precision diagnostics, and redefining the role of medical physicists in clinical practice and research.

The Medical Physicists’ Role in AI Governance: Lessons Learned
Presenter: Daniel Vergara, MS, DABR, University of Washington

The use of AI tools in radiology is quickly expanding into all areas of the imaging chain. This lecture will explore the critical role of medical physicists in the governance of artificial intelligence within the radiology department. It will highlight lessons learned from integrating AI into clinical practice, including ethical considerations, data quality management, and risk assessment. Attendees will gain practical insights into how physicists can guide safe, effective, and accountable AI implementation in medical settings.

Objectives

Analyze how CAD, radiomics, and AI are reshaping imaging science and articulate the evolving role of medical physicists in clinical practice and research

Evaluate the responsibilities of medical physicists in AI governance, including ethical considerations, data quality assurance, and risk management

Identify opportunities for synergy between medical physics and imaging informatics to advance safe, effective, and clinically impactful AI integration
