Building upon foundational DICOM knowledge, this advanced course takes participants deeper into the intricacies of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard. Module 3 focuses on Protocols and Services, covering essential elements such as Verification, Worklist, DICOM Store, Query/Retrieve, and the significance of Modality Performed Procedure Step (MPPS) and Storage Commitment. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of these vital components, enhancing their proficiency in managing medical imaging data within DICOM environments. Module 4 delves into Conformance and Advanced Topics, emphasizing the interpretation of conformance statements, exploring Structured Reporting, and delving into the critical realm of Dose Reporting. This course equips participants with the expertise needed to navigate advanced DICOM functionalities and address complex imaging scenarios.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze interface issues with devices using the DICOM standard and develop strategies to resolve them effectively.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of interface solutions and identify areas for improvement.
  • Create interface solutions that effectively utilize the DICOM standard to support, manage, and develop medical imaging devices.

Format/Class Structure

This is a live, virtual course held on SIIM’s Zoom platform. Participants will engage in instructor-led, interactive learning with hands-on training using SIIM’s Virtual Hospital Program (VHP).

Who Should Take This Course

The course is tailored for professionals who regularly interface with a PACS, such as PACS administrators and Radiologic Technologists. Biomedical engineers, service engineers, and IT personnel who work with digital acquisition modalities and image-enabled systems like Electronic Health Records will also benefit from this course. The course is also ideal for software developers, integration and interface analysts looking to build a career in healthcare imaging and informatics.
