This comprehensive on-demand course explores various medical imaging modalities, covering operating principles, clinical applications, data considerations, and interpretive aspects. Students will gain skills in estimating digital modality impacts, identifying workflow bottlenecks, and specifying software and display needs. Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and differentiate the most common medical image types and understand the parameters used to characterize them, such as resolution, image matrix, and study/file size.
  • Recognize and describe the characteristics of X-ray modalities (CR/DR, RF, XA, MG, CT), including typical images generated and the image and study characteristics specific to each modality.
  • Differentiate the characteristics of non-X-ray modalities (US, MR, NM, PET, and PET/CT), including typical images generated and the image and study characteristics specific to each modality.
  • Recognize and describe the characteristics of modalities used in non-radiology specialties (cardiology, dentistry, ophthalmology, pathology, radiation therapy), including typical images generated and the image and study characteristics specific to each specialty.
  • Estimate the potential impact of common digital modalities on storage capacity, infrastructure, and system performance, identify bottlenecks in a digital department workflow based on examination characteristics, and specify workstation software and display requirements based on image type and characteristics.
