In this episode, hosts Mohannad and Prasanth interview Jay Crawford about data storage technologies discussed in Chapter 7 of the second edition of PIIRT. These core concepts are critical for understanding not only issues of business continuity and disaster recovery, but also system performance, latency, and resource provisioning.

The discussion covers storage standards and technologies such as RAID, as well as the change in storage utilization with advent of evolving storage media architectures going from magnetooptical, spinning platter, solid state, and tape archives. In particular, the transition from storage silos to enterprise imaging coincided with an explosion of storage needs for the next generation scanners, modalities such as Tomosynthesis, cardiology, pathology, dermatology, clinical research, comprising unique business with disparate storage needs, and datatypes, where the Vendor Neutral Archive paradigm has become the de facto standard.

Jay Crawford is the Chief Imaging Informatics Officer at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is a Biomedical Engineer, with subsequent Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Health Administration with emphasis on Information Technology and Leadership. Jay has been involved in Academic Medical Center PACS configuration, implementation, and support since the mid 1990’s.
