Leesburg, VA (December 2, 2019) – Cheryl Kreider Carey, MBA, CAE, Executive Director of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) announced today that David Avrin, MD, PhD, FSIIM will succeed Janice Honeyman-Buck, PhD as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Imaging Informatics in Medicine (JIIM). Dr. Avrin will formally step into this role on January 1 for a year of overlap and onboarding with Dr. Honeyman-Buck in the final year of her contract.

“The opportunity to help shape the content of JIIM is incredibly exciting for me. As we all know, digital medical imaging is integral to patient care because it has become an extension of the physical exam of the patient. It guides both initial diagnosis and ongoing care, particularly in oncology. The Journal is the forum for the academic thinkers in our domain to present cutting edge developments to improve the quality and safety of patient care through digital imaging, including machine learning. It is a distinct honor to follow Roger Bauman, Steve Horii, and Janice Honeyman-Buck in this role,” said Dr. David Avrin.

Dr. Avrin is currently a Professor of Clinical Radiology and Medicine at UCSF, Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. As past Vice-chair of informatics, Dr. Avrin oversaw the integration of medical imaging and patient-care information systems that enables radiologists to deliver more relevant clinical care, as well as contribute significantly to the educational, and research missions.

Dr. Avrin is a member of the Medical Center informatics team at UCSF that seeks to improve quality of care, safety and efficiency through IT. To date, he has written fifty-five papers on these topics, and five book chapters on the clinical applications of digital medical imaging, and the investment and role of these various systems in the academic missions of education and research.

He is a fellow of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine and the American College of Radiology. He has served in several university and national leadership positions, most recently as the program director of the UCSF Clinical Informatics Fellowship, and the chairman of the RSNA Steering Committee for Digital Roadmap Content.

Dr. Avrin completed his medical degree and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
