This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the HL7® version 2 standard, covering everything from versioning and compatibility to message structure, segments, trigger events, and arrival messages. The course is divided into three modules, each focusing on specific aspects of the standard. Students will learn about versioning and compatibility, message structure, segments, trigger events, and arrival messages, and transmission. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Recall the basics of the HL7® version 2 standard, including versioning and compatibility, message structure, segments, trigger events, and arrival messages. 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nuances of the HL7® version 2 standard and how they impact healthcare data exchange. 
  • Describe the different kinds of HL7® version 2 which may be encountered in a healthcare setting. 

Format/Class Structure

This is a live, virtual course held on SIIM’s Zoom platform. Participants will engage in instructor-led, interactive learning with hands-on training using SIIM’s Virtual Hospital Program (VHP).
