Gain expertise using Wireshark packet sniffer, DICOM simulators and validators (DVTK), as well as comparison and editing tools to diagnose and troubleshoot connectivity problems through a hands-on virtual environment. Additionally, learn how to round up information from a PACS/Archive database using SQL. This course offers essential tools and techniques for resolving connectivity issues in imaging informatics workflows.

Attendees will:

  • Develop a solid understanding of how to configure Wireshark, including filter usage, and recognize communication errors such as unsupported file types and compression schemes.
  • Learn how to interpret error conditions reported by receivers such as a PACS, validate DICOM headers for problems, and edit DICOM headers to resolve issues.
  • Practice basic SQL queries to a PACS archive.
  • Gain hands-on experience using the SIIM Virtual Hospital Platform (VHP), a simulation/test environment, to learn how to use the most common open source and freely available logging and validation tools. Basic knowledge about DICOM (i.e., know about headers and the protocol sequences) is highly recommended to get the most benefit.

Whether working as clinicians, imaging IT professionals, medical physicists, PACS administrators, or vendors, attendees will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to troubleshoot and resolve connectivity issues, ensuring seamless integration of imaging systems.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Differentiate the use of various tools, such as Wireshark packet sniffer, DVTK simulators, and comparison and editing tools, to troubleshoot connectivity issues in imaging informatics workflows.
  • Compare the effectiveness of Wireshark configurations, including the use of filters, to diagnose and troubleshoot communication errors.
  • Identify common communication errors, such as unsupported file types and compression schemes, and create appropriate strategies to resolve them.
  • Differentiate error conditions reported by a receiver, such as a PACS, and analyze DICOM headers for problems.
  • Create and implement effective methods for editing DICOM headers to resolve connectivity issues and ensure seamless integration of imaging systems.
  • Create and implement basic SQL queries to a PACS archive to retrieve and analyze data.
