Similarly to pixel and voxel, the term is a portmanteau of detector and element. It is the smallest discrete element of a detector configuration.

A feature called “binning” combines dexels into a smaller number of larger dexels (e.g. two 0.625 mm dexels become a single 1.25 mm dexel) for the purpose of improved sensitivity. The increased sensitivity comes at the loss of resolution as the system is instructed to no longer distinguish the smaller dexels within the binned dexel, making the boundary of the combination the new minimum resolution.
