A DICOM service used to communicate exam status, number of images performed, and performed information from the modality to both the RIS and PACS. The DICOM Modality Performed Procedure Step (MPPS) closes the loop between the IS, PACS and modality. The modality provides information about the actual performed study, the number of images that were scanned and the status of the exam. This information is communicated between a digital modality and the PACS and RIS. MPPS allows a modality to communicate the status of the study. An information system that supports this service could identify an exam as being completed. MPPS allows a device to communicate what the exam performed actually was, to allow changes in the procedure to be communicated, versus what was scheduled, which could trigger a RIS to issue a change order. In addition, it tells when a procedure has been started, indicating this on the scheduling list, and provides information about the number of images generated. The MPPS also provides for radiation dose management because it also optionally can communicate the amount of dose that was adminsitered to the patient. The modlaity communicates the MPPS infomation to the MPPS manager, which makese sure that both the RIS and PACS get the MPPS infomation.
