Network Time Protocol (NTP) is designed to synchronize the clocks of computers that are network enabled. In the context of DICOM, this is important for two applications:

– for audit trails, to make sure that the recorded time of an event is the actual time
– to synchronize simultaneous acquisition of different modalities, such as an EKG with a cardiology CINE run.
