When used with MRI, spectroscopy (specifically magnetic resonance spectroscopy or MRS) can be used to detect specific compounds in imaged tissues in addition to hydrogen alone. Incorporating spectroscopy data into MRI studies is becoming more common.

The DICOM standard, in the form of a new enhanced MR information object definition, has the provision to exchange spectroscopy information in a standardized way, making it available to mainstream PACS workstations.
