What is your current imaging informaticist role?

Independent Consultant in Imaging Informatics.

What do you love most about imaging informatics?

This may sound like cliché, but the answer is the community. I often say that people’s careers drift into imaging informatics for a variety of reasons, but they end up falling in love with imaging informatics and staying because of the community more often than not.

If you could choose anyone as a mentor, who would you choose?

Do I have to choose one? There are so many amazing people in the SIIM circles that I would not waste a chance to draw on their wisdom and experience.

What one thing, either industry-related or not, did you learn in the last month?

I am constantly learning new things and ingesting new acronyms (no shortage of those in our line of business). I think I would choose the next generation of IHE profiles: Prioritization of Worklists in Reporting, and Real-Time Communication for Interactive Multimedia Reporting, as the most intriguing thing I learned of in the past month.

How do you define success?

Driving patient-care forward and improving healthcare outcomes. This may be obvious for the clinicians in the room, but for others like myself, who are not directly/indirectly treating patients, we are here because we want to play our little part in making healthcare better and more accessible for the sake of patients, and don’t forget those patients may be friends, family or even ourselves at times.

What’s the last book you read or TV series you binged?

The Art of Taking It Easy by Dr. Brian King, it is a stress-management book with a slight humorous twist. Anyone who knows me would know I appreciate humor a lot. This is a book I’d recommend without hesitation.

People love the networking at SIIM. Do you have a networking story?

I have many, but I’ll share one… One of my earliest mentors was Chris Meenan, who is well-known as one of the nicest people around. I met Chris when Don Dennison nominated me to help Chris with a learning lab all the way back at SIIM 2013. I was still new on my imaging informatics journey at the time, but Chris, plus many other kind-hearted people along the way, helped orient me in my journey and provided endless opportunities for learning, growth, and engagement with the community. I am forever grateful for all my mentors & friends in this community.
