What is BPSITE?

There is a clear and necessary need to standardize medical imaging terminology. Solving this problem by creating data “crosswalks” requires significant human intervention, allowing adulteration and misinterpretation of data, and can compromise patient safety.

The Body Part Standardized Imaging Terminology (BPSITE) initiative aims to standardize medical vocabulary to increase safety and conformity in the industry.

Survey Responses

"Coordination of anatomy terminology between anatomy education, medical imaging and that used by practicing and research physicians is a major issue. A common terminology would be wonderful!"

"As new solutions and technologies are implemented in our organization, and due to the increasing integration between solutions, having the applications and humans speaking the same language is imperative."

"Through the use of our own developers we've had to map many body part names to master body part list. This list has to continuously be updated as we add new partners. This can be [redundant and] burdensome."

"The inconsistency introduces complexity and additional effort/cost in managing the dataset for AI development."

"Lack of standardization creates issues with hanging protocols in PACS. That's one easy example!"

"We've implemented our own "standard" that only applies to our practice. In the end, our standard is another silo of data."

"Lack of standard ontology for medical anatomy make it very difficult to normalize and consolidate imaging data. This hampers efforts to build a true enterprise imaging strategy."

"Systems must have a common way to be interoperable."

"We deal with many ontologies today that make semantic interoperability a challenge."
