This course is a comprehensive introduction to the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) standard. This course covers the essentials of FHIR® including its architecture, design principles, and various aspects of implementation. Participants will learn how FHIR® enables the exchange of healthcare information across different systems, devices, and organizations. The course includes hands-on exercises to help students develop practical skills in implementing FHIR®. Students will learn how to work with FHIR® resources, elements, and profiles, and how to implement RESTful FHIR® APIs. Additionally, students will learn how to use the FHIR® terminology and validation services.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Define the key principles and components of the FHIR® standard, including its architecture, design, and various aspects of implementation.
  • Explain how FHIR® enables the exchange of healthcare information across different systems, devices, and organizations.
  • Apply knowledge of FHIR® to implement FHIR® resources, elements, and profiles, and to implement RESTful FHIR® APIs.
  • Analyze FHIR® use cases and develop FHIR®-based solutions for real-world healthcare scenarios.
  • Synthesize knowledge of FHIR® with other healthcare terminologies and standards to ensure interoperability and effective data exchange.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of FHIR® implementation in healthcare settings and suggest improvements where necessary.

Format/Class Structure

This is a live, virtual course held on SIIM’s Zoom platform. Participants will engage in instructor-led, interactive learning with hands-on training using SIIM’s Virtual Hospital Program (VHP).

Who Should Take This Course

This course is ideal for healthcare professionals, software developers, IT personnel, and anyone interested in understanding the FHIR® standard and its implementation in healthcare.
