American College of Radiology | ACR

The American College of Radiology (ACR) is a professional organization comprising radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists, and nuclear medicine physicians. ACR’s substantial contributions in imaging informatics included the standardization of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM).

Originally, ACR, in collaboration with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), initiated the ACR-NEMA standard, the precursor to the DICOM standard we use today. This standard enabled the interoperability of imaging devices and systems, revolutionizing the way medical images are stored, transmitted, and shared across different platforms and devices.

Furthermore, ACR promotes best practices and quality control in radiology through guidelines and accreditation programs. The college develops and implements standards that advance the science of radiology, improve patient care, and contribute to the better management and integration of radiological services in the healthcare landscape. Through these roles, the ACR continues to influence the future of imaging informatics and the broader field of radiology.
