CRT is the acronym for Cathode Ray Tube. It is the conventional monitor technology. CRTs are (still) cheaper than the alternative display technology, flat panels.

A CRT generates an image in the following way: A CRT creates a white pixel by targeting an electron beam to a front screen which lights up the phosphor crystals. Creating a black pixel is easily achieved by the CRT by suppressing the electron beam so that no electrons make it to the screen.
