The DICOMDIR file is part of the storage model defined for physical media and is the standard directory structure specified for DICOM media exchange in part 10 of the DICOM Standard. This DICOMDIR is constructed as a flat directory file and contains patient, study, series, and image information about each file in a collection of DICOM-compliant files (a file-set). Users that need information about any given DICOM file-set can read the DICOMDIR file instead of having to read the actual files themselves.
