HCPCS is the abbreviation for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System. This is the coding system for procedures.

The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System includes two levels of codes: Level I is numeric and is the American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT); Level II codes include numbers and letters and are mainly non-physician services (ambulance, prosthetics, etc.) that are not included in the CPT codes. A Level III system was designed for locally-used codes but these were discontinued in 2003.
