Transport Layer Security, and authentication and encryption standard that is widely used and also adopted by DICOM as a means to implement security. It is the successor of SSL.

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a protocol that provides secure comminucations on the Internet. TLS is an addition to the OSI layer 4: transport layer, and is a successor of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. Part 15 of the DICOM standard contains a Secure Transport Connection Profile for TLS.
