Interactive multimedia reporting (IMR) combines textual reports with images, tables, graphs, hyperlinks, and other media to better convey the report’s meaning to clinicians and patients. Since the first clinical radiology use of IMR in 2015, there has been slow and steady progress across enterprise imaging modalities including cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, pathology, dentistry, radiation oncology, and endoscopic procedures. IMR is a potent tool to integrate machine learning into the imaging workflow both as a medium to convey algorithmic results and a source of high-quality labels to help train and monitor machine learning tools. The lack of interoperability between disparate EHRs, image archives, viewers, and report authoring tools remains a barrier to widespread implementation of interactive multimedia reporting.

This webinar, which is based upon the recently published HIMSS-SIIM White Paper, Interactive Multimedia Reporting Technical Considerations will outline the technical issues impeding multimedia report creation and integration with electronic health records. We will review the findings of the HIMSS-SIIM Enterprise Imaging IMR Workgroup that has published two white papers and guided the IMR IHE Technical Framework Supplement that was recently published for trial implementation. Participants will learn about these evolving interoperability standards and the important roles that vendors and users have in enabling widespread distribution of these enhanced reports.

Objectives

  • Recite benefits of interactive multimedia reporting (IMR)
  • Describe the technical barriers to implementation of interoperable IMR
  • Effectively advocate for emerging standards on enterprise imaging IMR applications
  • Recognize the role of IMR for training and workflow integration of machine learning
